Shoe’s Black Book – Graffiti in the 1980s von Niels Shoe Meulman bietet einen Einblick in die prägenden Jahre eines Künstlers. Vor den Galerien, der Anerkennung, seiner Entwicklung als Typograf und der Gründung der Calligraffiti-Kunstbewegung gab es dies: ein abgenutztes und unerbittliches schwarzes Buch voller Tags, Stücke und Umrisse. Zwischen 1985 und 1987 dokumentierte Niels Shoe Meulman (Amsterdam, 1967) seinen Werdegang vom staunenden Neuling zum Künstler, der seinen eigenen Stil voll entwickelt hat. 

Dieses schwarze Buch ist mehr als nur ein Skizzenbuch, es ist ein Zeugnis der Zeit, als Shoe mit New Yorker Künstlern wie Rammellzee, Dondi White und Keith Haring unterwegs war. Es ist eine Aufzeichnung seines Lernprozesses: teils Tagebuch, teils Spielwiese, teils Testgelände. Hier liegt eine Faksimile-Ausgabe eines Buches, das gestohlen und auf mysteriöse Weise zurückgegeben wurde. Aber es ist auch verziert: Shoes zusätzliche Notizen und scharfe Erinnerungen rücken diese Ära in den Fokus.

Jede Seite enthält Graffiti-Wissen, das mündlich und von Hand zu Hand weitergegeben wurde. Shoes Black Book ist sowohl Dokument als auch Artefakt: unmittelbar, ungeschliffen, authentisch. Während andere Bücher eine Kultur dokumentieren, hat dieses Buch dazu beigetragen, sie aufzubauen.

Die Bücher sind handsigniert mit einem Shoe-Tag, der ein integraler Bestandteil des typografischen Coverdesigns ist.
