Jamaika, Queens, New York Mitte der 1980er Jahre. Rapper, Promis und Hip-Hop-Fans kamen aus der ganzen Stadt, um sich ihr individuelles T-Shirt von den Shirt Kings zu holen. Der Stil reiste durch Plattencover und Musikvideos um die ganze Welt, und die Designs von Shirt Kings wurden bald zum Synonym für Hip Hop und die Kultur, aus dem Nichts etwas zu machen. „Shirt Kings: Pioneers of Hip Hop Fashion“ betrachtet die Anfänge der Streetwear durch die Linse der Pioniergruppe künstlerischer Unternehmer, bekannt als „Shirt Kings“. Durch die Übertragung der Graffiti-Fähigkeiten von Zügen und Spraydosen auf Hemden und Airbrush schufen sie einen neuen Look für eine neue Generation.
Edwin „Phade“ Sacasa ist einer der Gründungskünstler der Gruppe und durch seine Archive werden wir in die 1980er Jahre in New York City versetzt, wo die Mode laut, farbenfroh und voller Cartoon-Bilder war. Aber nicht irgendwelche Cartoon-Bilder für die Cartoons wurden urbanisiert. Mickey Mouse mit Fila-Anzug, Casper the Friendly Ghost mit Goldzähnen und Pink Panther mit Goldketten. Menschen aus der ganzen Stadt machten sich auf den Weg nach Jamaika, Queens, zu einem kleinen Einkaufszentrum namens Coliseum, wo man leicht die größten Namen des Hip-Hops der damaligen Zeit treffen konnte. Von DJ Red Alert über LL Cool J und Big Daddy Kane bis hin zu Mike Tyson – sie alle mussten ihre Shirt Kings-Designs haben. „Shirt Kings: Pioneers of Hip Hop Fashion“ zeichnet die Kunst, die Stile und die Menschen auf, die treue Anhänger der Shirt Kings waren, und nimmt uns mit auf eine Reise in die Vergangenheit, als Individualität und Kunst in New York City vorherrschten.
